A Michaelson Experience

Recently, I have been listening to a lot of Ingrid Michaelson Ingrids heartlately. Reasons for this—One: Her music makes me feel happier when I have the homework blues. Two: Her songwriting skills are flawless.  And three: She puts her heart into her music. Basically, she’s a very talented and genuine person who brings positivity into the world.

Ingrid Ellen Egbert Michaelson is a half Swedish American; New York based indie pop singer-songwriter who was born December 8, 1979. In 2006, Michaelson independently put out her second album, Girls and Boys. After a music producer from ABC Drama Grey’s found her music online, the producer made it possible for the single Keep Breathing to play during Grey’s Anatomy Season 3 Episode 25- Didn’t We Almost Have it All. After this, Michaelson was approached by many record companies. Michaelson, being the amazing person that she is, wanted to retain all of her rights as an independent artist and signed a deal with Original Signal Recordings. Michaelson wanted the label to act as the marketing and distribution arm.

In September 18, 2007, Michaelson re-released her album Girls and Boys into the mainstream market on September 18, 2007. This album peaked at #63 on the Billboard charts. That’s is a pretty great accomplishment. Now, if you are still not convinced that Ingrid Michaelson is a unique artist that you need to be listening to–here are my top four songs/reasons why Ingrid Michaelson is a spectacular human being.

Top Four songs that are also reasons why Ingrid Michaelson is a spectacular human being:
  1. “Everybody”

This is an oldie that sure to put a smile on anyone’s face because “everybody wants to love and everyone wants to be loved.” If you are feeling down you better listen to this song right now!

  1. “Girls Chase Boys”

Originally, intended to be a break-up song Michaelson’s framed this music video to ingrid chases boyssimulate Robert Palmer’s late ‘80s single “Simply Irresistible”. The take away in this song is that “no matter who or how we love we are all the same” –Ingrid Michaelson

  1. “You and I”

This cute and catchy song captures the idea that as a couple we may not have a lot of money but we can make the best of what we do have—and strive to get to where we want to be.

  1. “Afterlife”

This is an empowering song that tells people to face their fears head on and to know that you are capable of doing whatever you set your mind to. This song gives me such a confidence boost.

CONCLUSION: Ingrid Michaelson is a great addition to society and her art through music has such a positive impact on the world and gives people those happy tingly feelings inside.Ingrid_MichaelsonJune15

Spectacular Summer Treats!

I am that person who doesn’t have a sweet tooth–I have sweet teeth! With summer around the corner, I cant help but think of all the delicious treats there are to eat! Clearly, I love sugar; maybe a little too much–maybe that why I have so much energy.Smore frap plz

Anyway, sugar and summer go together like peanut butter and jelly. Another reason I love this time of year is because Starbucks has their Frappy Hour from 3 pm- 6 pm, if you don’t already know. I have to say their new S’more Frappuccino is delicious–but fair warning, if you don’t like things too sweet, like my mother, this Frappucino may not be your favorite. Regardless, Starbucks knows what’s up in the sugar department.

Yum shortcake iceStrawberry Shortcake Ice cream bars are my favorite summer time treat. They are to die for and very delicious and the fact that they are cute to look at, is an added plus. My addiction to sugar has found its way into an info graphic I’ve created (click on the thumbnail to see the full view). This info graphic covers a westernized view of the sweets people prefer to eat. Comment below and tell me what your favorite summertime treat is?

Inspiring Quotes

imagesWords are so powerful. They easily influence how people feel, whether that’s through songs, dance, poems, or writing. Since words are so powerful, its important to feed our minds with healthy words and thoughts. How might one go about this? You can do any of the things I’ve previously mentioned, read poems, dance, or listen to a song; or you can read some inspiring quotes. Inspirational quotes pick you up just like a cup of coffee or an upbeat song would.

In my life, I find it easy for me to get stressed, discouraged, and even doubt my abilities at times. I know that most people have felt this way at some point in life as well. I find that when I take that little bit of time for myself and listen to music, dance, and treat myself I feel a lot better. Reading inspirational quotes is the icing on the cake. It encourages and reminds me that I am capable of anything I want to do.

You should feel this way too– and if you don’t here are a list of inspirational quotes to pickimages (1) you up today. Enjoy!

Photography: A Renaissance Girl’s Perspective

When I was a teenager, I attended an art school named Tacoma School of the Arts also known as SOTA for short. At this school, each student is required to choose a major. A few being: Theater, Visual Arts, Creative Writing, Dance, and Music. I can be indecisive at times, and because of this, my major was Renaissance. I got to do a little bit of everything. I was in theater, musical theater, video and graphic design, drawing, songwriting and dark room photography. Photography is such a beautiful way for others to express themselves. Not only is photography a fun activity, but it has this artistic style and flar16-best-panoramic-photography.previewe to it. This style or flare intrigues people like myself to analyze photos.

The way we are supposed to analyze photos are through the elements of art and the principles of art. The elements of art include evaluating: shape, line, color, and texture.

The principles of art take evaluating to another level through movement, harmony, variety, rhythm, unity, emphasis, balance, proportion, and pattern.  Next, I am going to analyze a couple of photos like I did in high school.I have to say this was fun and brought back a lot of good memories.

B and w Description: In this black and white photo there is a wooden box with a statement on it. In the background there are a couple more wooden boxes with statements on it; these boxes cannot be read as easily as the one in front. In the back of the photograph there is a old style rusty bike.

Reflection: This photo makes me feel happy and confident. It encourages Erik Qualman’s idea of being “FLAWsome” and accept the imperfections about yourself.

Formal Analysis:

Elements of Art-The lines in this picture are straight because of the box in the picture. The shape is a rectangle and because this picture was taken at an angle the lines and shape are enforced more. The black background of the sign immediately pulls the viewer in with the combination of the white letters. The lighting around the sign forces you to look at the sign because it looks lighter than the center. Your eye is drawn upward because of the bike and dark signs in the background. Clearly, there is contrast between the black and white in the picture. Again the white stands out and makes the viewer look at the words.

Principles of Art-Proportion and emphasis is represented here by the box because it is the largest piece in the picture. I feel a sense of unity from this picture because every element in the picture has a black and white scale. This ties everything together. Finally, I sense rhythm in this picture because there are two other boxes in the background of the photo. Harmony is in this inspiring photo because they are using small particles (background boxes) gives a completed whole look to the photo.

Description: This picture is of nature. Specially a lake surrounded by dark green trees and mountains. The top half of the picture includes a bright blue sky with morphed white clouds.

Reflection: This photo makes me feel tranquil and at peace. This also makes me feel exhilarated and want to explore.

Elements of Art- When viewing this picture its easy to see that this picture is split in half horizontally. Shape is represented in this photo through a triangle shape being made with the trees and the mountains. The shadow on the lake created from the trees and the mountains create a reflective triangle shape on the water. Lines are represented in the sky–its kind of like someone just took the clouds and decided to stretch that out to create those lines across the sky. Color is another element in this photograph. The hue is very bright in the sky, trees, and water. The mountains have a bright hue as well but not as bright as the other vibrant colors.

Principles of Art- There is a sense of balance in the picture because the trees, mountain, and sky reflect onto the lake. There is a sense of harmony and completeness in those photo that creates unity. The sky is emphasized here because it immediately catches your eye when you look at it. The bright and darkness in the sky contiribute to this as well. Proportion is represented strongly here. The mountains and the trees are way smaller than the sky and the lake. I think this helps create the sense of balance because there are two big spaces on the top and bottom me of the photo- and the mountains and trees are about the same size.

I hope you all are doing well. Remember the next time you look at a photograph you may want to analyze it to understand it better.

The Brilliance of Grey’s Anatomy

Greys titleCAUTION: If you have not watched the second half of season 11 you should NOT read this blog because there are spoilers!!!

I don’t know about you all, but honest to God I whole heartedly adore the show Grey’s Anatomy by Shonda Rhimes. I have friends who agree, but after watching exciting seasons like eight and nine, have falling off the bandwagon due to new characters. This is understandable to some degree–because Rhimes has a way of emotionally attaching the viewer to certain characters. If those characters are suddenly taken off the show I can understand how a viewer would want to stop watching.

I have stayed loyal to Grey’s because Rhimes’ character development is spot on. Characters you thought you would always hate end up being the ones you love the most. Grey’s Anatomy has so many exciting aspects that I am interested in as well–love, drama, and life lessons. Not to mention, the medical aspect of the show is very interesting and entertaining. Granted, some medical features are not completely factual, but the diseases are– and these diseases happen to real people. This has definitely caused me to shed a few tears. Another feeling that is a very frequent theme in Grey’s Anatomy is love.

Love

While watching this show, you soon discover that it is not just about doctors and their patients. It’s also about their personal lives–whether that is a natural disaster or their love life. There have been many relationships that have filtered through this show. Some successful, others not as successful.

Throughout all of this time, the main character Doctor Meredith Grey and her neuro-surgeon husband, Derek Shepard have managed to stay together through thick and thin. They have been through more than the average couple, especially this season (season 11) I wasn’t sure if they were going to make it. The way the creator, Shonda Rhimes, sets everything up, it seemed as if Derek and Meredith were about to end their marriage for good.

Derek was offered a job by the president in Washington D.C. He decided to decline the offer because his wife Meredith wanted to stay in her home town Seattle, WA and MERDER fightingcontinue her work there. Derek’s decision quickly took a toll on him and he began to resent Meredith. Tensions ran high and the couple got into an argument resulting in Derek accepting the job in Washington D.C. Once he arrived, he gets settled and starts to work with a woman who was on her way of making a medical breakthrough. Once this woman and Derek finally get the results they desired in the lab– this woman made a move on Derek.

How did Derek respond? He took the next plan back to Seattle to tell Meredith what happened. To finally say to her and I quote “I thought D.C. was everything and I was wrong–you–youderek smiles–you’re everything–I love you–and I’m not gonna stop loving you–Meredith I can’t live without you–I don’t wanna live without you–and I’m gonna do everything in my power to prove it” (abcfamily.com). After this, Meredith paused and thought with a concerned face. Meredith went on to say “I can live without you…but I don’t want to…I don’t ever want to”(abcfamily.com). The narrator who is also Dr. Grey voices “Just because we can live without something, it doesn’t mean we have to. This brings me to the next subject I’m going to talk about; life lessons.

Life Lessons

For some who dislike this show, Grey’s Anatomy is a corny drama about doctors and their love lives. It is much more than that for me and many others; it is an amazing piece of art that affects our lives with the life lessons it teaches us. Enjoy these life lessons quotes I’ve picked out:

  • No one remembers easy–Why do we even try when the barriers are so high and the NOREodds are so low? Why don’t we just pack it in and go home? It’d be so, so much easier. It’s because in the end, there’s no glory in easy. No one remembers easy. They remember the blood and the bones and the long agonizing fight to the top. And that is how you become legendary.

– Amelia Shepherd (Season11, Ep.14-The Distance)

  • Do you like what you see?–Picture the life you dreamed of living, the person you pictured being with. Picture the job you dreamed you’d have. Are you living the life you envisioned for yourself? Are you who you wanted to be when you grew up?

How’s the view? Do you like what you see? Think back again to when you were little. Are you living the life you pictured for yourself? Or are you still dreaming of something bigger?

– Meredith Grey (Season11, Ep.18-When I Grow Up)

  • Transition is movement–There’s a stage you go through in child birth and it’s the toughest part. It’s called the transition stage. You’ve been pushing so hard and so long. You’re exhausted, spent and there’s nothing to show for all of your effort. During this transition stage, it feels like you can’t go on but it’s because you’re very nearly there.

Transition is movement. From one part of life to a whole new one. And it can feel like one long, scary, dark tunnel but you have to come out the other side. Because what’s been waiting there, might be glorious.

– Meredith Grey (Season10, Ep.16-We Gotta Get Out of This Place)

I would like to thank Shonda Rhimes for creating such a powerful show that has been on the air for over ten years. I will continue watching Grey’s Anatomy until it’s over and I’ll take with me the life lessons I’ve learned along the way.

Happy Birthday SELENA!!

Picture this: A small child, around age 4, is ready to go to school. Pre-Kindergarten to be exact; the father picks up the child and places her in the back of his black trail blazer. The car is so big she can stand inside of it without hitting her head on the ceiling. The child hears the engine start to rumble as the father pulls out of the driveway. The next thing that is heard is a warm, velvety, voice of a Mexican American singing Bidi Bidi Bom Bom out of the speakers of the car. This singer is Selena Quintanilla Perez; not only a singer but a songwriter, actress, spokesperson, and a fashion designer. This small child was me.

SelenaSelena Quintanilla Perez was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson Texas. Her parents’ names are Abraham Quintanilla, Jr and Marcella Ofelia Samora. Perez had two siblings, a sister, Suzette Quintanilla, and a brother, A.B. Quintanilla III.

Selena y Los Dinos is the band that Abraham Quintanilla, started when Selena and her siblings were young. This is the same band Selena was a part of when she passed away on March 31, 1995. The murder was done by her registered agent named Yolanda Saldívar. Initially, she seemed like a good influence that wanted nothing but good things for Selena, her career, and her fashion boutiques. Turns out, she embezzled more than $60,000 in forged checks from both the Selena’s fan club and the boutiques. Saldívar border lined on obsession with Selena–which is clearly not healthy.

Selena Perez died at the young age of 23. She not only left her family, b0303_CCLO_selenabook1ut her husband Chris Perez, an American guitarist, songwriter. The man she married a few years back in 1992. Like most couples–this one planned on having little family and a farm together. Sadly, this never happened.

Growing up, my father played Perez’ music all the time. Although I didn’t know what she was saying some of the time, I loved the music. My father constantly tried to teach me Spanish when I was younger and this was one of his ways he taught me. My dad is Puerto Rican as well so I’m sure that helped influence this music as well. I can honestly say that Selena was a great role model for me because she was such a successful woman. She was able to handle her singing career with everything she was doing.

Selena was so influential, a movie was made about her. It is titled “Selena” starring Jennifer Lopez. I love Selena so much that I own this movie on DVD.  It is biographical drama covering the important events in Perez’ life. It’s such a great movie because you can gain more insight on her life, especially if you were old enough to recognize her work when she was alive. I want to close by saying Happy Birthday Selena you are truly loved and missed.

Different Strokes For Different Folks

Eggs n crosseas eggs

Happy belated Easter everyone!!! I hope everyone is doing well.

I celebrated Jesus’ Resurrection on the west side of Washington by going to my church named Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church (also known as Allen A.M.E.). After church, my family and I went to eat at Joe IMG_0001Seppi’s; a little Italian restaurant that is located in Tacoma Washington.

After dinner, my mother, sister and I went to my mother’s friend Sidney’s house to top off our holiday with an Easter egg hunt. Yes, I am a 20-year old who likes to participate in Easter egg hunts and gladly received an Easter basket from my mother. The endeavor was very fun considering this hunt was between only my sister, Tondi and me. There was definitely some sibling rivalry there. For the record, I won with seventeen eggs; Tondi had fifteen.

For me, all three activities are necessary to have an enjoyable EaIMG_4926ster holiday. I find it quite intriguing that there are so many different types of people in the world that celebrate and live life differently. For example, my Caucasian friend, Travis and his family celebrates Easter differently then I do. They wake up, have a big breakfast, then an egg hunt, and end with exchanging their gifts. This still creates a fun holiday environment; it’s just a different experience from mine.

I hope everyone enjoyed this Spring filled holiday with smiles, happiness, family and friends. I’d like to close by asking you all–how did you celebrate Easter?
